What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction, also known as spiritual guidance and spiritual companioning, is an ancient practice found in many cultures and religions. You are here because you desire to explore your sacred journey.
Spiritual direction offers a way to consider how your upbringing, your faith tradition (if any), the joys and sorrows of your personal history, and your present day reality connect you to the Sacred - whether you name it your Higher Power, Creator, God, the Divine, or something else. Spiritual direction seeks to illuminate and animate this relationship, thus distinguishing it from counseling, therapy or life coaching.
A spiritual director offers one the experience of “holy listening” – taking you where you are at. Grace, healing, and growth are sought through these times of active listening, reflection, and prayer during the session and in the days that follow.
What can I expect in a spiritual direction session?
This sacred space and time is defined by you. In your first conversation with a spiritual director you may discuss your spiritual heritage, your current spiritual identity, and what is compelling you to seek a spiritual director at this time. Then, in subsequent sessions, you have the opportunity to tend to the stories and experiences of your daily life with which you would like to spend time. Each session often opens and closes with a time of silence, prayer, or ritual as a reminder of our shared sacred intention.
Spiritual direction sessions are generally scheduled once a month and last for about an hour.

What is MKE Spiritual Directors?
Milwaukee Spiritual Directors (MKESD) is a peer group of spiritual directors committed to bringing the gift of spiritual direction to the wider Milwaukee community.
To be part of MKESD, you must be trained to companion seekers in person and virtually and commit to Spiritual Director International’s Guidelines for Ethical Conduct. Membership in Spiritual Directors International (SDI) and ongoing supervision - whether through a peer supervision group or individual supervision - is strongly encouraged of all members.
MKESD meets regularly for peer-led continuing education and networking.
